WHY IT MATTERS
It directly affects the result.
In 2K systems, the hardener is the component that initiates the chemical cure of the paint; it is mixed with the base in the ratio stated on the data sheet. If the ratio is judged by eye, the film does not fully cure, stays soft and its chemical resistance drops.
Thinner adjusts viscosity to suit the application method and ambient temperature. The wrong thinner or over-thinning means sagging, loss of hiding power and reduced film thickness. Each product family's own original thinner must be used.
